Lawrence Elliott Willis is an American jazz pianist and composer. He has performed in a variety of styles, including jazz fusion, Afro-Cuban jazz, bebop and avant-garde. Willis was born in New York. After his first year of studying music theory at the Manhattan School of Music, he began performing regularly with Jackie McLean. After graduating, he made his first jazz record, McLean's Right Now! in January 1965, including two works by Willis. However, his first recording of any kind, as singer of Music and Arts Chorale Ensemble, performed Aaron Copland's opera under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. He decided to focus on jazz music because of the difficulties African-American musicians face when finding jobs in the concert music industry. Throughout his career, he has performed with many musicians, including several years as a keyboard player for Blood, Sweat & Tears.
