Laura Secord was a Canadian hero of the War of 1812. She is known to have traveled 20 miles outside the territory occupied by the United States in 1813 to warn British forces of an impending American attack. Little is known about her contribution to the war throughout her life, but since her death she has been regularly honored in Canada. Although Laura Secord has no connection to it, most Canadians associate her with the Laura Secord Chocolates company, which is named after her on the centennial anniversary of her walk. Laura Secord's father, Thomas Ingersoll, lived in Massachusetts and fought alongside the Patriots during the War of Independence. In 1795, he moved his family to the Niagara region of Upper Canada after applying for and being given land. Shortly afterward, Laura married loyalist James Secord, who was severely injured at the Battle of Queenston Heights at the beginning of the War of 1812. While still recovering in 1813, the Americans invaded the Niagara Peninsula. , including Queenston.
