Luis Barragán

Luis Ramiro Barragán Morfín was a Mexican architect and engineer. His work has influenced contemporary architects visually and conceptually. Barragán's buildings are frequently visited by international students and professors of architecture. He studied as an engineer in his home town, while undertaking the entirety of additional coursework to obtain the title of architect. Barragán won the Pritzker Prize, the highest award in architecture, in 1980, and his personal home, the Luis Barragán House and Studio, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.

About Luis Barragán

Modernist architect who designed notable residential communities in Mexico, including the San Cristobal Estates equestrian development, Torres de Satélite, and exclusive residential area Las Arboledas.

Before Fame

He studied engineering at the Escuela Libre de Ingenieros in Guadalajara, from which he graduated in 1923. He then toured Spain and France, where he was introduced to the literature of writer-designer-artist Ferdinand Bac, who became a major source of inspiration for him.


He strove to create "emotional architecture" in spite of the functionalism of modernism.

Family Life

His family was residing in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, when he was born. He married and had three children.


He hailed from the same country as musician Carlos Santana.
