Mahonri Young
Mahonri Mackintosh Young is an American sculptor and realist socialist artist. During his long career, he has created more than 320 sculptures, 590 oil paintings, 5,500 watercolor paintings, 2,600 prints and thousands of paintings. However, he is mainly recognized for his sculptures. His works include landscapes, portraits, bust, life-size sculptures, monuments and engravings. Whatever the preferred medium, his work is characterized by spontaneity; he often liked to prepare his work with quick sketches of the scene. He feels it makes his work more natural than using modeling in the studio. He achieved considerable commercial success throughout his life, although he did not find success until his mid-thirties. The large carved commissions from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are especially beneficial to him. Born into a wealthy family with a pioneering Mormon heritage, Young is the grandson of second President of the LDS Church and first Governor of Utah, Brigham Young.
