Maria Grinberg is a Russian pianist. She was born in Odessa, Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire. His father is a Hebrew scholar and his mother teaches piano privately. Until the age of 18, Maria learned the piano from the famous Odessa teacher David Aisberg. Eventually she became a pupil of Felix Blumenfeld and after his death she continued to study with Konstantin Igumnov at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1935, she won the second prize in the pianist competition of all leagues. Grinberg has become a major figure in the Russian piano school. However, in 1937 her husband and father were arrested and executed as “enemies of the people”. The pianist was fired by the state administration and took a job as a accompaniment to an amateur dance group. During this time, she occasionally attended concerts playing timpani. Somehow, she was later selected as a pianist soloist.
