Born in Alabama and raised in Ohio, Matthews joined the 10th Cavalry Regiment at the age of 15, after being recruited at Lexington Racecourse, Ky. Pershing's Mexican expedition to hunt down Mexican General Pancho Villa. He was then transferred to Virginia, where he took care of the horses of President Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor and was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps of the Buffalo Corps. At the end of his quarantine period, he served in combat operations in the South Pacific during World War II and received the rank of sergeant. He is recognized as an excellent sniper and horse performer.
