Mark George Tobey is an American artist. His strongly structured works, inspired by Asian calligraphy, resemble Abstract Expressionism, although the motifs in his writings are philosophically different from those of most painters of the School of Abstract Expression. His work has been widely recognized in the United States and Europe. Along with Guy Anderson, Kenneth Callahan, Morris Graves and William Cumming, Tobey is the founder of the Northwest School. With long life and long experience, he has a strong influence on others; friend and mentor, Tobey shares his interest in Eastern philosophy and religions. Similar to others at the Northwest School, Tobey primarily taught himself after his early studies at the Art Academy of Chicago. In 1921, Tobey founded the art department at Cornish School in Seattle, Washington. Tobey is a nonstop traveler, visiting Mexico, Europe, Palestine, Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, China, and Japan.
