Considered one of Ireland's finest musicians, his flute style has influenced many contemporary Irish flautists. During the 1970s, Molloy was a member of The Bothy Band and its successor, who re-established Planxty. He joined The Chieftains in 1979, replacing Michael Tubridy. During her career, Molloy has worked with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Paul Brady, Tommy Pe People's, Micheál Ó Súilleabháin and Dónal Lunny. Molloy owns a pub on Bridge Street in Westport, Co. Mayo, a place that regularly holds Irish music concerts.
