Cox, also a real perpetrator, wrote an unpublished manuscript titled The Associates in which the main character traveled across the country to commit a mortgage scam similar to the one Cox ran. Cox forged documents to make it look like he owned real estate, then fraudulently took collateral at five to six times their real value. He made millions that way; The published estimates were between 5 and 25 million US dollars. Cox's first conviction came in 2002 when he was sentenced to probation for mortgage fraud. He was then fired from his position as a mortgage broker at a company in the Tampa, Florida area.
