After attending Juilliard School under John Houseman, Gallagher began his theater career and appeared in a number of Broadway productions, winning the Theater World Award for his role in A Few Good people. From there, Gallagher moved to Los Angeles to continue working in film and television; after making her screen debut in George Washington, she graduated with recurring roles in Hill Street Blues and China Beach, and played roles in The Slap Maxwell Story, The Larry Sanders Show and Millennium. Catherine Black's role in the series was written in Gallagher's mind.
