Michael Vernon Townley is a former US-born agent of Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional, Chile's secret police under the Augusto Pinochet regime. In 1978, Townley pleaded guilty to the 1976 murder of Orlando Letelier, the former Chilean Ambassador to the United States, and Ronni Karpen Moffitt, Letelier's colleague at the Policy Research Institute. He was sentenced to ten years in prison and 62 months. As part of his defense agreement, Townley was granted immunity from prosecution; he was not extradited to Argentina to appear in court for the 1974 assassination of Chilean General Carlos Prats and his wife in Buenos Aires. He has lived under the US federal witness protection program since his release in 1983. In 1993, Townley was also convicted in absentia by an Italian court for plotting to kill Bernardo Leighton in Rome in 1975
