Georg Albert Ruthenberg, better known as Pat Smear, is an American musician best known as the rhythm guitarist of the rock band Foo Fighters, who has recorded five studio albums. . Smear was a founding member of the punk band The Germs, and touring guitarist of the grunge band Nirvana from 1993 to 1994. After Nirvana disbanded following the death of head Kurt Cobain, drummer Dave Grohl became the leader of the rock band Foo Fighters, with Smear early on on the guitar. He left Foo Fighters in 1997 before returning as a touring guitarist in 2005 and a full-fledged member since 2010.
