Paul O. Zelinsky is an American painter and writer best known for illustrating picture books for children. He won the 1998 Caldecott Medal for American Photo Book Illustrations, Rapunzel noted. His most famous work is The Wheels on the Bus, a bestselling portable book. Zelinsky was Caldecott's finalist in 1985, 1987, and 1995, the latter for Anne Isaacs' Swamp Angel. Twenty years later, they were tied for first place in the Children's Literature Association's Phoenix Picture Book Award, which annually recognizes the best picture book that did not win the grand prize 20 years earlier. "Books are not only seen in the quality of the illustrations, but also in the way the images and the text come together."
