Paul Warfield Tibbets Jr. is Brigadier General in the United States Air Force. He is best known as the pilot of the B-29 Superfortress known as the Enola Gay when he dropped Little Boy, the first atomic bomb used in the war, on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Tibbets joined the US Army in 1937 and qualified as a pilot in 1938. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, he conducted an anti-submarine patrol across the Atlantic. In February 1942, he became the commander of the 340 Bomber Squadron of the 97 Bomber Group, equipping the Boeing B-17. In July 1942, the 97 became the first heavy bombing group to deploy as part of the Eighth Air Force, and Tibbets became the group's deputy commander. The British flew the lead aircraft in the first US heavy bomber mission against occupied Europe on August 17, 1942, and the first US raid with more than 100 bombers on Europe on October 9, 1942
