Virgil Gus Grissom
Virgil Ivan "Gus" Grissom is a United States Air Force pilot and member of the Mercury Seven selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as the Project Mercury astronaut to become the first Americans in space. He is a Project Gemini and Apollo program astronaut. A member of the NASA Astronaut Army, Grissom is the second American to fly in space. He is also the second American to fly into space twice, only beaten by Joe Walker with X-15 suborbital flights. Grissom is a WWII and Korean War veteran, U.S. Air Force mechanical engineer, and test pilot. He was awarded the Medal of Excellent Flying Cross, the Aviation Medal with Oak Leaf Bunches, two NASA Medals of Excellence for Service and later the Congressional Medal of Honor of the 'space. During World War II, Grissom joined the United States Air Force as an aviation trainee.
