He is one of the pioneers of docudrama. His films present radical and pacifist ideas in a non-traditional style. He mainly focuses his work and ideas around the media and our relationship / involvement with a film or television documentary. Almost all of Watkins' films use a combination of dramatic and documentary elements to dissect historical events or events that are likely to occur in the near future. The first, Culloden, portrays the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 in documentary style, as if television reporters were interviewing participants and accompanying them into battle; a similar device was used in his biographical film Edvard Munch. The Commune recreates the days of the Paris Commune by using a large number of non-French actors.
