He is one of the pioneers of docudrama. His films present radical and pacifist ideas in a non-traditional style. The first, Culloden, portrays the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 in documentary style, as if television reporters were interviewing participants and accompanying them into battle; a similar device was used in his biographical film Edvard Munch.
