Pierre Louis Joseph Boulez CBE is a French composer, conductor, writer and founder of several musical organizations. He is one of the dominant figures in the post-war classical music world. Born in Montbrison in the Loire department in France, son of an engineer, Boulez studied at the Paris Conservatory with Olivier Messiaen, and studied privately with Andrée Vaurabourg and René Leibowitz. He began his professional career at the end of the 1940s as musical director of the Parisian theater company Renaud-Barrault. As a young composer in the 1950s, he quickly became a leading figure in avant-garde music, playing a central role in the development of holistic serialism and controlled music of chance. From the 1970s he pioneered the electronic conversion of musical instruments in real time.
