Pierre Gassendi
Pierre Gassendi is a French philosopher, priest, astronomer and mathematician. While serving as a church in south-eastern France, he also spent much of his time in Paris, where he led a group of liberal intellectuals. He is also an active observational scientist, publishing the first data on the movement of Mercury in 1631. The Gassendi lunar crater is named after him. He wrote many philosophical works, and some of the positions he studied are considered significant, finding a way out between skepticism and dogmatism. Richard Popkin points out that Gassendi was one of the first thinkers to conceive of a modern "scientific perspective" of moderate skepticism and empiricism. He clashed with his contemporary Descartes on the possibility of having certain knowledge. His most famous intellectual project attempted to reconcile Epicurean atomism with Christianity.
