Potter Stewart is an American lawyer and judge, having served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1958 to 1981. During his tenure he made significant contributions to judicial, criminal, law reform. civilians, access to courts. , and Fourth Amendment jurisprudence. After graduating from Yale Law School in 1941, Stewart served in World War II as a member of the United States Naval Reserve. After the war he practiced as a lawyer and served on Cincinnati City Council. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed Stewart to the post of judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the sixth round. In 1958, Eisenhower appointed Stewart to succeed retired Deputy Prosecutor Harold Hitz Burton, and Stewart won Senate confirmation the following year. He was often in the minority during the Warren Court era, but emerged as a voting centerpiece at Burger Court. Stewart retired in 1981 and was replaced by Sandra Day O'Connor.
