Raymond Arthur MacDonnell is an American actor known for his portrayal of Dr. Joe Martin in the daytime drama All My Children, a role he has played for 40 years. MacDonnell received the Emmy Daytime Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. Prior to appearing on All My Children, he played Philip Capice in the soap opera The Edge of Night from 1961 to 1969. 1967 , he starred in Dick Tracy in a Pilot Live TV show. The show was not selected. On September 29, 2009, MacDonnell announced his retirement from All My Children. Production on the show moved from New York to California in December 2009, marking the end of his 40 years as a guest, though he does appear as a guest occasionally. His retirement from AMC left Susan Lucci, who played Erica Kane, the only original actor yet to star in the series.
