Richard Hugo, born Richard Franklin Hogan, is an American poet. Although some critics see Hugo primarily as a regionalist, his work has resonated widely everywhere and at all times. Some of Hugo's works reflect the economic slowdown of the Northwestern United States, especially Montana. Born in Seattle's White Center, Washington, he was raised by his parents after his father left the family. In 1942, he legally changed his name to Richard Hugo, following his stepfather's surname. It served in World War II as a bomber in the Mediterranean. He left the army in 1945 after performing 35 combat missions and gaining the rank of lieutenant. Hugo's experience in the military is mentioned in one of his poetry books, Good Luck in Cracked Italian. Hugo received his BA in 1948 and an MA in Creative Writing four years later, at the University of Washington, where he studied with Theodore Roethke.
