Richard Charles "Dick" Lewontin is an American evolutionary biologist, mathematician, geneticist, and social commentator. As a pioneer in the development of the mathematical foundations of population genetics and evolutionary theory, he has pioneered the application of techniques from molecular biology, such as gel electrophoresis, for to questions about genetic variation and evolution. In a pair of famous 1966 papers co-authored with J.L. Hubby in the journal Genetics, Lewontin has helped set the stage for the field of modern molecular evolution. In 1979, he and Stephen Jay Gould introduced the term "spandrel" into the theory of evolution. From 1973 to 1998 he served as Dean of the Department of Zoology and Biology at Harvard University, and from 2003 he was a research professor there. Lewontin opposed the theory of genetic determination.
