Richard Mervyn Hare, commonly known as RM Hare, is an English philosopher of ethics who served as White's Professor of Ethical Philosophy at Oxford University from 1966 to 1983. Thereafter, he taught for several years at University of Florida. His super ethical theories had an effect throughout the second half of the twentieth century. Hare is best known for the development of regulation theory as a hyperethical theory, the analysis of the formal features of moral discourse justifying utilitarianism. Some of Hare's students, such as Brian McGuinness, John Lucas, and Bernard Williams, became famous philosophers. Peter Singer, known for his involvement in the animal liberation movement, explicitly applied some elements of Hare's thought, but not his theory of universal regulation.
