Robert Crippen
Robert Laurel Crippen is a retired naval officer and pilot, test pilot, aerospace engineer and retired astronaut. He has traveled in space four times: as a pilot of the STS-1 in April 1981, the first space shuttle; and as commander of STS-7 in June 1983, STS-41-C in April 1984 and STS-41-G in October 1984. He was also part of the Human Orbital Laboratory. Space shuttle approach and landing tests. He did not enter the space for any of the shows. In 1986, Crippen participated in the recovery of the remains of crew members after the space shuttle Challenger disaster. He was also part of the committee responsible for determining the cause of the crash. After retiring as an astronaut, Crippen entered NASA's leadership, namely Deputy Director at NASA Headquarters and then Director.
