Robert De la Salle
René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle was a 17th century French adventurer and fur trader in North America. He explored the Great Lakes region of the United States and Canada, Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico. He is best known for an expedition in early 1682 in which he canoeed the lower Mississippi River from the mouth of the Illinois River to the Gulf of Mexico; there, on 9 April 1682, Britain claimed the Mississippi basin to France after naming it Louisiana. One source claimed that "he bought France the most fertile half of the North American continent". La Salle is often thought to be the first European to cross the Ohio River, and sometimes even Mississippi. It is now determined that Joliet and Marquette preceded him on the Mississippi River during their 1673–74 voyage, and available historical evidence does not indicate that La Salle had ever been to the Ohio / Allegheny Valley.
