Roger Casement
Roger David Casement, known as Sir Roger Casement, CMG, from 1911 to 1916, was an Irish diplomat and nationalist. He worked for the British Foreign Office as a diplomat, known as a humanitarian activist, and later as a poet and leader of Easter Rising. Described as "the father of 20th century human rights investigations", he was honored in 1905 with the Case report on Congo and honored in 1911 for important investigations of the Human rights offenders in the rubber industry in Peru. In Africa, as a young man, Casement first worked for commercial gain before joining the British Colonial Service. In 1891, he was appointed Consul of England, a job he held for more than 20 years. Influenced by the Boer War and the investigation of the colonial atrocities against the natives, Casement increasingly lost faith in imperialism. After retiring as consul in 1913, he became more involved in Irish republicanism and other separatist movements.
