She built a successful career as an illustrator for magazines and books, and at a young age she became America's highest paid and most popular commercial illustrator. O'Neill earned an international fortune and reputation by creating Kewpie, the most famous cartoon character until Mickey Mouse. The daughter of a book merchant and a housewife, O'Neill grew up in rural Nebraska. She showed an interest in art as a child and sought a career as an illustrator in New York City at the age of fifteen. Her cartoon Kewpie, which first appeared in the Ladies' Home Journal in 1909, was later produced as a cookie doll in 1912 by J. D. Kestner, a German toy company, is followed by materials of manufacture and versions of celluloid. Dolls were very popular at the turn of the 20th century and are considered to be one of the first toys commercially available in the United States.
