She rose to fame in the 1930s and 1940s with her gospel recordings, characterized by a unique combination of witty lyrics and rhythmic accompaniment that was the forerunner of rock and roll. She was the first major star in gospel music recording and one of the first gospel musicians to engage audiences in rhythm and blues and rock-and-roll, later known as "soul original sister "and" godmother of rock and roll ".
