Rupiah Bwezani Banda is a Zambian politician who served as President of Zambia from 2008-2011. During Kenneth Kaunda's presidency, Banda held important diplomatic posts and acted politically as a member of the United National Independence Party. . Years later, he was appointed vice president by President Levy Mwanawasa in October 2006, following his subsequent re-election. He took over as president from Mwanawasa after Mwanawasa suffered a stroke in June 2008, and after Mwanawasa's death in August 2008, he became interim president. As a candidate for the ruling Multi-Party Democracy Movement, he nearly won the October 2008 presidential election by election, according to the official results. Opposition leader Michael Sata of the Patriotic Front defeated Banda in the September 2011 presidential election, so Sata took over Banda as president on 23 September 2011 .
