Samuel McIntire is an American architect and craftsman best known for his work on Chestnut Street, a classic example of Federal style architecture. Born in Salem, Massachusetts to housekeepers Joseph McIntire and Sarah, he was a business woodcarver who grew up in architecture. He married Elizabeth Field on October 10, 1778 and has a son. He built a simple house and workshop on Summer Street in 1786. From 1780, McIntire was hired by the prominent Salem businessman and the first American millionaire, Elias Hasket Derby, whom his family built or remodeled a series of houses. McIntire himself learned the style of Palladian architecture from books and quickly rose to fame among the city's elite for his design of elegant homes. In 1792 he submitted a proposal in competition for the US Capitol.
