Selman Abraham Waksman was a Jewish-American inventor, biochemist and microbiologist born in the Russian Empire who studied the decomposition of organisms living in soil that led to the discovery of streptomycin. and some other antibiotics. As a professor of biochemistry and microbiology at Rutgers University for four decades, he discovered several antibiotics and devised the processes that led to the development of many other drugs. The license proceeds from his patents funded a foundation for microbiology research, which established the Waksman Microbiology Institute located on the campus of Rutgers Busch University in Piscataway, New Jersey. In 1952 he received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for "the ingenious, systematic and successful studies of soil microorganisms leading to the discovery of streptomycin".
