Sherwood Anderson
Sherwood Anderson is an American novelist and short story writer known for his subjective and expressive work. Self-taught, he became a copywriter and business owner in Cleveland and Elyria, Ohio. In 1912 Anderson suffered a nervous breakdown that forced him to abandon his business and his family to become a writer. At that point, he moved to Chicago and ended up getting married three more times. His earliest work is the collection of short stories Winesburg, Ohio, which launched his career. During the 1920s Anderson published a number of short stories, novels, memoirs, essays, and a collection of poetry. Although his books were selling well, Dark Laughter, a novel inspired by Anderson's days in New Orleans in the 1920s, was his only bestseller.
