Born in an Osaka hospital and raised in the city of Sakaiminato, Tottori, he later moved to Chōfu, Tokyo, where he remained until his death. His alias, Mizuki, dates back to when he ran an inn called "Mizuki Manor" while painting for the kamishibai. As a writer of Yōkai stories, he is considered the master of the genre. Mizuki is also a famous historian, having published works relating to world history, Japanese history, and her own experiences with World War II.
