Sidney Clopton Lanier is an American musician, poet and author. He served in the Federal Army as a soldier, worked on the blockade ship where he was held, taught, worked in a hotel where he performed music, was an artist play church organ and be a lawyer. As a poet, he sometimes, but not privately, used dialect. Many of his poems are written in intensive, but often classical, American English. He became a hawker and selling poetry for publications. Eventually, he became a professor of literature at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and was best known for converting clock music into poetry. Many schools, other structures and two lakes bear his name, and he is hailed in the South as a "poet of the Confederation of the South". A 1972 postage stamp from the United States named him "an American poet".
