Simon Buckner
Simon Bolivar Buckner is an American soldier and politician who fought in the US Army during the Mexican-American War and in the Federal Army during the American Civil War. He was then the 30th Governor of Kentucky. After graduating from the American Military Academy at West Point, Buckner became a lecturer there. He interrupted teaching to serve in the Mexican-American War, participating in many of the major battles of that conflict. He resigned from the military in 1855 to manage his father's property in Chicago, Illinois. He returned to his hometown of Kentucky in 1857 and was appointed assistant general by Governor Beriah Magoffin in 1861. In this capacity he attempted to apply Kentucky's policy of neutrality at the start of the Civil War. When state neutrality was violated, Buckner accepted a commission in the Union Army after rejecting a similar commission in the Coalition Army.
