Smriti Zubin Irani is an Indian politician, former model, television actress and producer. Irani is a minister in the Indian Union cabinet. She sits in Narendra Modi's cabinet as Minister of Textile and was appointed Minister of Women and Child Development in Prime Minister Modi's second cabinet from May 2019. As a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, she is a Member of Parliament in Lok Sabha, representing Amethi. In India's 2019 general election, she defeated Rahul Gandhi - the country's main opposition leader and speaker of India's National Assembly - to win the seat. Gandhi's family previously represented the constituency for four decades. Previously, she was a member of Rajya Sabha for Gujarat and held several portfolios as a minister of the Indian government. At the 2nd Ministry, she was again sworn in as Cabinet Minister on May 30, 2019.
