Sir Stanley Spencer, CBE RA is an English painter. Shortly after leaving Slade Art School, Spencer was known for his paintings depicting scenes from the Bible that took place like in Cookham, the little village on the Thames where he was born and spent most of his life. Spencer calls Cookham "a village in paradise" and in his biblical scenes the villagers are portrayed as their evangelical counterparts. Spencer is adept at arranging multi-character works, as in his large paintings for the Sandham Memorial Chapel and the Shipbuilding in the Clyde Mountains, formerly the World War I memorial, while the painting is later the committee's committee World War II Artist Advisory Council. As his career progressed, Spencer often created landscape paintings because commercial demand and the intensity of his years of foresight diminished somewhat as eccentricities emerged.
