Stephen Heard is President of Georgia, a position that, out of necessity, was appointed by the Georgia House of Representatives and subsequently called Governor. He held this position from May 24, 1780 to August 18, 1781. A record indicates that Heard resigned as president in 1782. Heard fought during the French and Indian Wars and was an hero in the American War of Independence. He was a lieutenant colonel in the Georgian militia under Lieutenant John Dooly. He fought General Elijah Clarke at the Battle of Kettle Creek, where he was captured. Heard is also a friend of George Washington. After serving as governor, he served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1779 to 1795. Heard was born in Hanover County, Virginia in 1740 and died in Elbert County, Georgia in 1815 at the age of 75. His home was in Middleton, near Elberton. Fort Heard was built in Wilkes County, Georgia as a reserve in 1774 by Stephen Heard.
