Susan B. Anthony is an American social reformer and women's rights activist who plays a central role in the women's election movement. Born into a Quaker family committed to social equality, she collected petitions against slavery at the age of 17. In 1856, she became a New York State agent for the American Anti-Slavery Association. In 1851, she met Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who became her lifelong friend and colleague in social reform activities, mainly in the field of women's rights. In 1852, they founded the New York State Women's Personality Association after Anthony was prevented from speaking at a moderate convention because she was a woman. In 1863, they formed the National League of Loyal Women, which led the largest petition in US history to this point, collecting nearly 400,000 signatures supporting the abolition of slavery.
