Svante Arrhenius
Svante August Arrhenius is a Swedish scientist. Originally a physicist, but more commonly known as a chemist, Arrhenius is one of the founders of the science of physical chemistry. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1903, becoming the first Swede to win a Nobel Prize. In 1905 he became director of the Nobel Institute, where he remained until his death. Arrhenius was the first to use the principles of physical chemistry to estimate the extent to which increasing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere caused the rise in the Earth's surface temperature. In the 1960s, Charles David Keeling demonstrated that human-made carbon dioxide emissions into the air are sufficient to cause global warming. Arrhenius Equation, Arrhenius Acid, Arrhenius Base, Arrhenius Crater, Arrhenius Mars Crater, Mount Arrheniusfjellet, and Arrhenius Laboratory at Stockholm University are named in tribute to his contributions to science.
