He has served as Sri Lankan Minister of Labor, Housing, Social Services, Finance, Commerce, Food, Trade and Navigation and other government posts during a career spanning three decades . He founded the Employee Sponsorship Fund, Ceylon Petroleum Group, Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation and People's Bank during his tenure. As a writer, Ilangaratne is best known for writing Amba Yahaluwo, a popular children's novel. The novels of Mr. Tilaka Saha Tilaka, Lasanda and Nedeyo have been adapted into films. Amba Yahaluwo has been made into a TV series for many periods.
