After auditioning for jazz musician Bobbi Humphrey in 1988, Campbell was signed to the Warner Bros. label. In 1989, Campbell collaborated with Quincy Jones to direct "Tomorrow" on Jones' Back on the Block album, and released his best-selling debut platinum album, T.E.V.I.N. The album features her highest ranked single to date, "Tell Me What You Want Me to Do," which peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The debut album also features the single "Alone With You" and " Good-bye". His second double-disc album, I'm Ready, released in 1993, has two high-quality songs written by Babyface; "Can We Talk" peaked at No. 9 on the Hot 100 and No. 1 on Billboard R&B, and the title track from the album "I'm Ready", also peaked at No. 9 on the Hot 100 .
