Thomas Parnell is an Anglo-Irish poet and missionary, friend of both Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift. He was the son of Thomas Parnell of Maryborough, County Queen, a successful landowner who had firmly supported Cromwell during the British Civil War and settled in Ireland after the reestablishment of the monarchy. Thomas was educated at Trinity College Dublin and was Professor of Clogher in 1705. However, he spent most of his time in London where he joined Pope, Swift and others in the Scriblerus Club, contributed to The Spectator, and supported Pope in translating The Iliad. He is also one of the poets known as "Graveyard": His "A Night-Piece on Death", considered the first poem of "School of the Graveyard", has been published in the journal Poems on several occasions. , collected and edited by Alexander Pope and reportedly published by some scholars in December 1721 .
