James Thorne Smith, Jr. is an American writer on supernatural comic fantasy novels as part of the parallel story of Thorne Smith. He is best known today for his two Topper novels, fantasy comics related to sex, heavy drinking and ghosts. With remarkable illustrations, these books sold millions of copies in the 1930s and were also popular in paperbacks of the 1950s. Smith drank as often as his characters; James Thurber's The Years with Ross tells the story of Smith's inexplicable disappearance within a week. When asked why he hadn't called because he was sick, he replied, "The phone is in the lobby and it's drafting." Smith was born in Annapolis, Maryland, the son of a marine, and attended Dartmouth College. After his poor years in Greenwich Village, working part-time as an advertising agency, Smith achieved enormous success with the publication of Topper in 1926.
