Thomas Simpson is one of the UK's most successful professional cyclists. He was born in Haswell, County Durham, then moved to Harworth, Nottinghamshire. Simpson started cycling as a teenager before entering cycling, specializing in pursuit races. He won a bronze medal for cycling at the 1956 Summer Olympics and a silver medal at the 1958 Great Commonwealth and British Empire Games. In 1959, at the age of 21, Simpson was hired by the French professional racing team Saint-Raphaël - R. Geminiani - Dunlop. He joined their first team the following year and won the Tour of Flanders Championship in 1961. Then Simpson joined Gitane - Leroux - Dunlop - R. Geminiani; during the 1962 Tour de France, he became the first British driver to wear a yellow shirt, finishing sixth. In 1963, Simpson moved to Peugeot - BP - Englebert, champion of Bordeaux - Paris that year and Milan - San Remo in 1964
