He is known for his plays The Rez Sisters and Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing, which won him the Dora Mavor Moore Award and the Floyd S. Chalmers Award. Highway also published a novel, Kiss of the Fur Queen, based on the events that led to the death of her brother René Highway from AIDS. He is also known as the librettist of his first Cree opera, The Journey or Pimooteewin.
