Vardis Alvero Fisher is an American writer from Idaho who has written famous historical novels about the Old West. After studying at the University of Utah and the University of Chicago, Fisher taught English at the University of Utah and then at Washington Square College at New York University until 1931. He worked with the Federal Writers Project to Idaho Project Administration Project Administration, published in 1937. In 1939, Fisher wrote Children of God, a historical novel focused on The Early Church of Jesus Saints Christ in the last days. The novel won the Harper Award. In 1940, Fisher moved to Hagerman, Idaho, and spent the next 20 years writing a series of 12-volume Human Estimates, describing human history, from ancient times to civilization. Fisher's novel Mountain Man was adapted into the movie Jeremiah Johnson. Fisher is often grouped with the dissatisfied Mormon writer in Mormon novels.
