Vestal Goodman has been a performer of the Southern Gospel genre for over half a century. She is known as a solo performer and a member of the Happy Goodman family - rooted in her husband and siblings - one of the pioneer groups in gospel music. Goodman was the fourth in a family of six and started singing in church as a child. Growing up in the Church of God, her original intention was to learn about the Metropolitan Opera, but growing up in the church, she felt compelled to sing gospel music. She married Howard Goodman, a preacher nine years her senior, on November 7, 1949. They have a son Rick and a daughter Vicki. They have pastored churches and sang to churches across the country. Together with Howard's two brothers, Sam and Rusty, they are known as the Happy Goodman Family, helping pave the way for southern gospel music in the 1960s.
