Vincent Youmans
Vincent Millie Youmans is an American Broadway composer and producer. A Broadway composer of his day, Youmans has collaborated with virtually all of Broadway's greatest lyricists: Ira Gershwin, Otto Harbach, Oscar Hammerstein II, Irving Caesar, Anne Caldwell, Leo Robin, Howard Dietz, Clifford Gray, Billy Rose, Edward Eliscu , Edward Heyman, Harold Adamson, Buddy DeSylva and Gus Kahn. Youmans' first songs are remarkable for the economy of melodious material: phrases of two, three or four notes are repeated several times and varied by subtle rhythmic or harmonic changes. Later, however, apparently influenced by Jerome Kern, he switched to using longer pieces and smoother melody lines. Youmans publish fewer than 100 songs, but 18 of them are considered the standard by ASCAP, a remarkably high percentage.
