Viola Desmond
Viola Irene Desmond is a Canadian civil rights activist and black businesswoman from Nova Scotia. In 1946, she challenged racism at a New Glasgow cinema, Nova Scotia, refusing to leave the white-only section of the Roseland Theater. Because of this, she was convicted of a misdemeanor tax on the one-cent tax difference between the seat she paid for and the more expensive seat she used. Desmond's case is one of the most famous racist cases in Canadian history and has helped launch the modern civil rights movement in Canada. In 2010, Desmond was pardoned after being pardoned, being pardoned for the first time in Canada. The Crown of Nova Scotia also apologized for prosecuting her for tax evasion and admitted that she was rightly against racism.
